Every year, on the last Monday in May, we honor the brave, fallen, men and women who sacrificed for our Country. We know it as, MEMORIAL DAY.
History tells us………….
Congress declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971, meaning schools, banks, and government offices are closed. The Holiday was changed to be on the last Monday of May to give people a 3-day weekend.
On Memorial Day, American flags are flown at half-mast until noon. The raising of the flag at noon symbolizes how the living will never forget the sacrifice of those who have fallen and will always continue the fight. Many people will visit cemeteries to put flags & flowers on the graves of those who died. The president will visit the Tomb of the Unknown https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Explore/Tomb-of-the-Unknown-Soldier in Arlington Cemetery, which represents all who died and couldn’t be identified.
UMRC – Community Strong
The Memorial Day Holiday is celebrated and remembered in a variety of ways during this 3-day period.
UMRC and all our communities take pride in our resident veterans, their loved ones, friends and families. Each year, our campuses put on various events in honor of all those who served and died selflessly, while also comforting our grief stricken and showing our respect.
No matter where you are this Memorial Day, please pause to show respect during the National Moment of Remembrance Act by taking a moment of silence at 3 PM. While people can and should enjoy themselves on the holiday weekend, it’s important to show unity as a country and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Sincerely,
The Staff of United Methodist Retirement Communities
