Getting to Know Dementia: Free Community Training

Dementia is a challenging condition that affects millions of people worldwide; not only those diagnosed, but also their families, caregivers, and communities. Understanding dementia and learning how to provide effective care is crucial for improving the quality of life for those affected. We are excited to announce a free community training program at Chelsea Retirement Community that will help you gain valuable insights and practical skills in dementia care.

Positive Approach to Care®:

This comprehensive training program utilizes Teepa Snow's renowned Positive Approach to Care® (PAC) methodology. PAC is a person-centered approach that focuses on creating positive relationships and interactions with individuals living with dementia. By understanding the unique needs and experiences of those with dementia, we can provide more effective and compassionate care.

Understanding the GEMS® State Model:

One of the key components of this training is the GEMS® State model, which provides a framework for understanding the progression of dementia. Just as gemstones have different characteristics, people with dementia experience various stages with distinct needs and abilities. By learning about these stages, attendees will be better equipped to adapt their approach and provide appropriate support at each phase of the journey.

A Six-Session Series:

The training consists of six consecutive sessions, each building upon the last to create a comprehensive understanding of dementia care. Throughout these sessions, participants will explore the brain changes associated with dementia and learn how to differentiate these symptoms from normal aging or stress-related issues. This knowledge is crucial for early detection and appropriate intervention. To view the full schedule of classes, click here. Participants may attend any or all the classes.

Leading this training is Linda Mammel, Memory Care Program Manager at Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC). With her extensive experience and qualifications, Linda brings a wealth of knowledge to the program. She is PAC Certified and has been instrumental in obtaining the PAC Designated Organization accreditation for CRC.

Linda's passion for dementia care and her commitment to advocacy, coupled with her master’s degree in Workplace Education, Development & Leadership and graduate certificate in Aging Studies, make her an ideal instructor for this community training. Her expertise will not only benefit those directly involved in caregiving, but also help create a more dementia-friendly community at large.

When asked why this training is needed, she shares, “It is so important to learn what happens when a brain is changing due to some form of dementia, rather than normal aging. By understanding what happens to the brain in dementia, we can begin to understand, not only what is lost, but what is retained, allowing us to provide the right amount of support and learn best how we can adapt our approach to create positive relationships with our loved ones. We learn that those small moments of joy spent with a loved one with dementia can have a huge impact on all involved.”

This training is open to anyone interested in learning more about dementia. Whether you're a family member caring for a loved one, a healthcare professional seeking to enhance your skills, a student exploring career options in the field, or simply a concerned community member, this program offers valuable knowledge and resources. Dementia can affect us all, either directly or indirectly. By participating in this free community training, you'll gain invaluable knowledge and skills to better understand and support those living with dementia. This enlightening six-session journey into the world of dementia care can help create a more compassionate and understanding society for all.
